Adding a second cross-flow to our Cellar

We have recently installed a second cross-flow in our Cellar. Shipped in from Venezia Italy, this cross-flow will enable us to process more beverage products, more frequently and more efficiently,  filtering up to 25,000 liters per hour. We caught up with Toby & Taylor, the project leads, to learn more about this recent installation and how this will enhance Idyll’s cellar operations.

What is the purpose of a crossflow?

A crossflow is essentially a large filter. It is the final filtration prior to bottling and ensures that the liquid is of premium quality and can travel through our packaging line filters. Wine products are filtered pre-bottling, whilst cider products are filtered twice, post-ferment and pre-bottling.

What products will the crossflow be used for?

This crossflow will be used for almost all products that we produce. A majority of the wine and cider products we package are cross-flowed, alongside some rtd products depending on their flavouring additives. Having a second cross flow in our Cellar means that we can dedicate one cross-flow to white products and another to coloured products.

What was involved in the installation process?

The first step was to create new drains and pour new concrete in our cross flow shed. The floor was then sealed by Roxset for added protection from necessary cleaning chemicals. Electrical wiring and plumbing was completed before the arrival of the cross-flow. Once it arrived it was put in position and connected to all essential outlets by the Della Toffla team. The crossflow is officially ready for operation and our Cellar Team have been busy utilising it in the lead up to Christmas.

How will this crossflow enhance Idyll’s efficiency?

A second cross-flow will enable our Cellar team to keep up with the constant demand for product that comes with operating five packaging lines at once (2 bottling, 2 canning and a keg line). Whilst wine only requires a single filtration, cider products require two – post-ferment and pre-bottling. Given our increase in cider packaging over recent years, a second cross flow ensures our Cellar can continue producing product to align with our packaging schedule.
