Minimizing Environmental Impact with Packaging Innovation

Idyll Wine Co has a strong track record of integrating sustainable and responsible practices into our business. We are particularly dedicated to minimizing the impact our packaging has on the environment.

Our cans and slab cartons are made from an average 55% recycled content, while our bottles have an average recycled content of 40%. All our cans, cartons and bottles are 100% recyclable and by working with our innovative industry partners, we’ve been able to lessen the impact our packaging has on the environment even further.

Key environmental packaging statistics at Idyll Wine Co in 2020:

  • Sequestered 2560.2 tonnes of CO2 through purchasing and using Amorim Cork cork stoppers.

  • Saved 743 tonnes of carbon emissions and 456 tonnes of solid waste by using CHEP pallets.

  • Repurposed 328,169 recycled containers by using PakTech carrier handles for our brews.

According to Amorim Cork, their ground-breaking cork oak forests are living ambassadors of sustainability and a driving force of sustainable development. The 2.2M hectares of cork oak forest play a crucial role in the world’s ecological balance, fighting climate change and desertification and sustaining biodiversity. Because it is biologically rich and varied, but also extremely vulnerable, the cork oak forest is one of the world’s 36 biodiversity hotspots, on par with Amazonia and the African Savanna. Were it not for the cork industry, these forests would likely be destroyed to make way for other industrial pursuits. Idyll Wine Co was responsible for sequestering 2,560.2 tonnes of CO2 through purchasing and using cork stoppers for Amorim Cork in 2020.

CHEP Australia’s Sustainability Certificate uses an independent, peer reviewed life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology to determine the environmental differences between CHEP’s circular solution pallets and common single-use alternatives over their full life cycle. In 2020 Idyll Wine Co saved 743 tonnes of carbon emissions (equivalent to planting 1,115 trees) and saved 456 tonnes of solid waste (equivalent to 4,179 240L wheelie bins) by using pallets provided by CHEP Australia.

Paktech create carriers that we use to hold our four packs of canned cider together. These carriers, or handles, are made from recycled containers (think milk jugs, juice containers and water jugs). By using PakTech’s innovative packaging solution, Idyll Wine Co repurposed 328,169 recycled containers into handles in 2020.

With another big year of expansion ahead, we are committed to continuing these initiatives while also finding new opportunities to minimize our impact on the environment. We are part of a successful, local composting syndicate and have an extensive onsite water treatment facility that diverts all wastewater into vineyard irrigation.
